PERSPECTIVE • In the Middle – 4/16/23

In my experience, most people prefer either the aisle or window seat when they fly. You don’t find many seeking the middle seat. It seems to happen by default and when you are stuck in the middle between two strangers, you feel trapped and uncomfortable. It’s true in life. When you start something new there’s excitement, fun, you jump in with both feet, invest 100%. But somewhere in the middle, stuff happens; it’s easy to get stuck. There are details to manage, challenges, difficulties, this is where many bail out. This is where the disciples find themselves following Jesus’ crucifixion. They had started well and anticipated a far different finish than what they are now experiencing; they are cowering in a locked room with no idea how to move forward. But, just at the right moment Jesus shows up, and his presence changes everything.

Scriptures – John 20:19-22; Romans 8:38; Matthew 18:20

Verse – In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples had met together with the doors locked for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood right in the middle of them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed. Jesus said to them again, “Yes, peace be with you! Just as the Father sent me, so I am now going to send you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:19-22) “For where two or three have gathered in My name, I am there in the midst.” (Matthew 18:20)

Thought – When Jesus appeared in the midst of the disciples, they were calmed by his presence. He speaks the words, “Peace be with you.” Jesus is the Prince of Peace; he is peace! Peace entered the room! Jesus’ presence changed everything. The disciples had entered that room frightened, cowering, afraid of being arrested and executed, but now they know that Jesus is alive. They are comforted, full of hope, bold. They leave inspired and empowered to preach the Gospel. Jesus’ words calmed their fears. The danger hadn’t changed. In fact, all the disciples, except John, would eventually be executed for their faith, but having Jesus with them, gave them the calm confidence that they could face whatever might come. Peace isn’t the absence of conflict; it’s the presence of Jesus no matter the circumstance. That’s worth celebrating! Jesus showed that he had paid the price for salvation. They were overjoyed! His wounds comfort them because they confirm that he is their risen Lord. He has restored their faith, their hope, their dream. They know that nothing can stop God! They are also ready for the mission that Jesus is setting before them. The mission to spread the Good News. His presence, his words, and his wounds calm their hearts for the task ahead. Then Jesus breathes on them and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” They receive the empowerment that will stay with them, keep them strong, sustain them when Jesus returns to heaven. The disciples have a new perspective on the resurrection. It’s not the end! They are not stuck in the middle of a terrible situation. Jesus is alive, the Holy Spirit is with them, they have what they need to fulfill their mission. You too have what you need to move forward. You are not stuck in any situation that God can’t handle. With Jesus living in you, you have all that you need!

Questions – Have you ever felt stuck in the middle of a situation? If so, how did you get out? Are you stuck in the middle now? If so, what is your plan? Do you know people who like being stuck in the middle? Why do some people thrive on conflict and crisis? Describe how Jesus’ resurrection changed the future for the disciples? How has Jesus’ resurrection changed your future? What is your mission? Are you doing your best to fulfil it?

Response – Share the hope that Jesus has brought into your life with someone who is struggling. Help them to understand that their life has purpose and joy in Christ. Be prepared to pray with them, to guide them to accept Jesus if they are at a point to ask him in.

Prayer – Dear Lord, thank you for being with me. I long for the peaceful power of your presence in my life daily. Calm my fears and give me power to overcome the difficulties of life. I want others to share in the joy of knowing you. Make my life a testimony to your presence. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
